Alex Kelly is a speech and language therapist with over 30 years experience of working with people with social skills difficulties who now runs her own business offering training and consultancy in social skills, speech and language therapy in over 40 schools.
The 2 day workshop will introduce you to social skills and what can be done about social skills difficulties. It covers how to assess social skills, set up and run social skills groups effectively and run other methods of social skills interventions such as media and stories, It is a practical and interactive course so you will go away with the theory and be able to implement interventions in your school straight away.
The first day focuses on assessment and reassessment and includes:
·An introduction to social skills
·Assessing social skills and planning where to start
·The theory behind the hierarchy of skills
·Practical exercises in assessing social skills and planning intervention
·Setting targets and measuring effectiveness
The second day focuses on all aspects of intervention and includes:
·Teaching social skills and the 4 step approach; behaviour, environment, motivation and strategy
·1:1 therapeutic approaches such as stories and comic strips
·Setting up and running social skills groups
·Creative arts approaches including modelling, role play and puppets
·Technology approaches such as media and computer programmes
